How to fix desktop or laptop slowness issue

How to fix desktop or laptop slowness issue: Do you have a desktop or laptop slowness issue? Then there are some simple guidelines to follow by which your desktop or laptop speed will increase and run smoothly.

We are going to discuss these guidelines which are applicable for Microsoft operating systems Windows Vista, Windows 7 and windows 10 to efficiently keep up your computer.

Here going to discuss mainly three available options to resolve desktop or laptop slowness issues, they are

  1. Free up disk space
  2. Disk defragmentation
  3. Check and fix any disk errors

1#: Free up disk space

You can improve the performance of your computer (in turn you don’t feel desktop or laptop slowness issue) by clearing the disk space. There is a tool called Disk Cleanup tool which helps you free up space on your computer hard disk. The tool identifies files on the computer that you can safely delete, and then will give an option to you to choose whether you want to delete some or all the distinguished files.

Mainly this tool will help you to find below type of files and remove:

  • Temporary Internet files
  • Downloaded program files (like ActiveX controls & Java applets).
  • Empty the Recycle Bin.
  • Windows temporary files.
  • Optional Windows components that you don’t use.
  • Installed programs that you no longer use.
How to start Disk Cleanup:

in Windows 10: search for “Disk Cleanup” or go to all Apps–>Windows Administrative Tools–>Disk Cleanup.

In Windows 7: Click Start–> All Programs–> Accessories–>System Tools–>Disk Cleanup.

It will prompt to specify which drive you want to clean if there are more than one drive on your desktop or laptop.

Once you select the drive and hit OK button, the system will start the calculating how much space you can actually free up on that specified drive. Once the calculation done, it will display the list of file types with the amount of space you can free up. Here you can have a choice to choose whether you want to keep some files intact or clean up all the files identified by this utility.

Here deselect the all the boxes where you want to keep the files as is; select only files you want to delete and hit OK button. On OK hit, system will remove all the selected files which will free up the space on the selected disk. Before deleting the selected files permanently, system will prompt to confirm the deletion. And once you hit delete Files button, system will delete the selected files and auto close the disk cleanup window.

2# Disk defragmentation:

Most of your desktop or laptop slow performance is impacted by disk fragmentation. When files on your computer fragmented, system will search whole hard disk to fragment it back when it’s opened. This process will increase the response time.

Disk Defragmenter utility in Windows systems which consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer’s or laptop’s hard disk so that each occupies a single place on the disk. With your files stored neatly without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

It is better to run Disk Defragmenter regularly and when you have added large number of files on the specified disk or your current free disk space is very less or you have installed new programs or a new version of Windows.

How to start Disk Defragmenter:

in Windows 10: search for “Disk Cleanup” or go to all Apps–>Windows Administrative Tools–>Defragment and Optimize Drives.

In Windows 7: Click Start–> All Programs–> Accessories–>System Tools–>Disk Defragmenter.

Once you opened the utility, it will display all the drives available on computer and system reserved space. Here you have to select the specific drive and click Analyze button. Once analyzing done, you can click on Optimize button to optimize the selected drive. You can also set the optimization schedule, either days or weeks or month. This will make sure that the disk defragmentation process will run automatically to optimize the drive to meet maximum efficiency in storage capacity.

3# Check and fix any disk errors:

Still laptop slowness issue, you don’t see much improvement in system performance and thinking how to fix desktop or laptop slowness issue? Here is another option left to try to optimize your system. By using Error Checking utility you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk. If there are any bad sectors found on the hard disk, that will impact your system performance and some times read/write access will also get changed. And this Error Checking utility will help you to scan the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether any files or folders are misplaced. If you use your computer daily, I suggest you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

How to run this utility?

Goto –> My Computer (This PC in windows 10) –> select any drive you want to search for bad sectors and right-click–>click Properties–>In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab–> Then click the Check button.

In case system found no errors, it will display below message box and you can still choose to go ahead for re-checking the bad sectors on the selected drive. If any errors found then it will prompt you the options and you can decide if you want them all to get fixed.
